Gilboa Captain 1st Junior @ NorAm GS
Perseverance pays offs for Samuels - 15th overall and 1st for Juniors in North American Cup Giant Slalom!

This week  Lauren Samuels, Team Gilboa's captain, United States Ski D-Team member &  a Hopkins High School junior, captures a victory at the North American Cup or Nor-Am series  in Aspen –  racing against athletes from world cup and various national teams, France, Swiss, Japan, Czech Republic, Canada, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, etc.

In her first events of the season, Lauren competed in the North American Cup or Nor-Am series.  Monday started out fast for Lauren on the hardest ice rink of snow.  After starting in the 71st position she was 8th after the first timing split.  The only problem was she didn't make it to the second timing split.  In the second half of the course, she had a very hard and exciting fall that had some folks concerned including a few coaches.

Monday’s Giant Slalom race was exactly the same icy conditions.  Results were much more favorable for Lauren.  In a field of 70 athletes Lauren started in the 60th position and was in 18th place after the 1st of two runs.  The only damage this time was a cracked helmet from taking a gate out with her head.  Nothing her mom couldn't solve, just a run back to the girls' condo to grab the back-up helmet for second run.

Lauren finished 15th overall and 1st for Juniors (athletes between 15 - 19 years old).  This is the biggest move-up for any competitor in the race otherwise known as the bibbo award.   These awesome results from the Nor-Am series will be used to determine the group of athletes that represent the U.S. at the World Junior Championships in France, late January.

Great job, Lauren!

Dear Team Gilboa Membership

Hopefully everyone had a warm and active summer.  For me the summer was filled with skiing at Mt. Hood, dirt biking, kite boarding and weekend trips to northern Minnesota.  As the sun sets earlier and earlier in the evening I get more excited for the upcoming ski season.  As this excitement grows I reflect on last season’s accomplishments.  Last season was a season to remember.

Last season was a success in many ways.  Jr. Race saw great numbers and great enthusiasm.  Scott Patterson and his staff continue to develop little rippers that move on to the J456 program with great skills.  DJ Walling, Nate Gruys,  Michelle Buck and Judy Lloyd continue to produce a hungry group of  J456’s that love to free ski and compete.  Year in and year out they send a talented group to the Junior Olympics with great results.  The J3 Staff of Derek Hager, Charlie Simacek, and Dave Mueller are developing some great talents that are scoring great results.  They had some great surprising performances at the Junior Olympics last year. Peter Maxwell, Tom Richardson, Dave Samuels and Myself worked along side the J12’s.  This group traveled around the country scoring podiums and generally dominating the competition.  The older group also had a high quality graduating class that is now spread out around the county at numerous top ranked colleges.  The clubs development is really working to produce hard working, dedicated, respectful, successful athletes and young adults.

The finest and grandest of last years Team Gilboa accomplishments is Lauren Samuels being named to the US Ski Team Development Team!!  She was named to the team in May and has been working with the group since then.  This is a HUGE accomplishment that should help all of the other athletes on the team realize that it is possible to make the US Ski Team from Team Gilboa and Hyland Hills.  Lauren started Team Gilboa in the Jr. Race program ripping around Hyland Hills hardly tall enough to get on the chair lift.  Her love for skiing and racing brought her up through the age class ranks.  Last year competing as a second year J2 she pretty much dominated everyone in every discipline throughout the country.  Throughout the year she competed at the Nor-am level in every discipline gaining valuable experience at difficult venues and challenging terrain.  Her results really shined at J2 Nationals, the premier event in the country for 15-16 year olds.  Competing in all 5 events at the championships, Lauren captured 2 Golds, 2 Silvers and a top ten:  2nd-SL, 9th-GS, 1st-SG, 2nd-DH, and the overall National champion.  It is the first time in the history of J2 Nationals that a female from Central has won the overall title.  Lauren’s success has come for a number of reasons.  One of the biggest reasons she has succeeded and qualified for the US Ski Team Development team is because of her strength and conditioning.  She is religious about following Aaron Leventhal’s strength and conditioning program.  Recently at the US Ski Team physical testing camp Lauren recorded the highest vertical leap of any female on the US Ski Team!  That includes the world cup team.

Lauren is now the 2nd Team Gilboa athlete that has started in Jr. Race and been named to the US Ski Team directly from the club.  Kaylin Richardson is the other athlete who was named in 2000 and is currently on the B team and a 06 Olympian.  Its great to see Kaylin and Lauren representing Team Gilboa and Hyland Hills on the US Ski Team.  Which Team Gilboa athlete will be next to join them?

The elected captains of Team Gilboa for the 09-10 season are Ryan Quinlivan, Lauren Samuels, and Taylor Johnson.  They are excited to lead the team into the new season kicking off Dryland on Sept. 21st.  Physical fitness is the one area of ski racing that is completely controlled by the athlete.  The more time spent on strength and conditioning, the faster ski racer you will be.  I encourage every athlete make dryland a habit in order to get strong and fit while having fun and building great friendships.  Start the season out right, be a part of something that makes you better.

Get fit, Ski fast.
